Gahlot issues orders to Chief Secretary, who is on DMRC Board

Ramping up its protests against the scheduled hike in Metro fares from October 10, the Delhi government on Thursday asked its representatives on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Board to oppose the hike aggressively.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot issued directions to Chief Secretary M.M. Kutty, who is one of the directors nominated by the State government to the Board, to call a meeting of the directors nominated by the State government. At that meeting, Mr. Gahlot asked the Chief Secretary to convey to the directors to oppose the hike “aggressively”.

The State government nominates five members to the Board, the chairperson of which is the managing director of the DMRC. Apart from that, Mr. Gahlot asked Mr. Kutty to call for a meeting of the DMRC Board before October 9 in order to roll back the hike.

Comes after CM’s orders

Mr. Gahlot’s directions came after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had issued similar directions to the Chief Secretary on Tuesday. The hike was announced by DMRC in May, when phase one of the fare increase was rolled out. Fares are expected to go up depending on the distance travelled.
