The Customs department today seized internet protocol television set top boxes valued at Rs 1.48 crore which an importer had misdeclared as android boxes seeking to "circumvent" the Bureau of Indian Standards Certification.

Following information that a Hyderabad-based company had imported 24,000 units of IP TV set top boxes from China, here, the officials inspected the consignment which were marked as "android box", an official release said.

Investigations revealed that the importer had sought to "circumvent BIS certification" by misdeclaring them as Android boxes and claiming that the imported goods do not fall under the purview of Bureau of Indian Standards.

Under the BIS certificaton, a licensed foreign company has to manufacture products as per Indian standards.

As the imported boxes were found not to comply with the requirement of BIS certification, the consignment valued at Rs 1.48 crore was seized and further investigation was on, the release added.
