Saif Ali Khan has not tasted much success in terms of the performance of his films at the box office. His last film ‘Rangoon’, which also starred Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor, received good reviews but performed miserably at the box office. He must be having a lot of expectations from his latest project Chef, directed by Raja Krishna Menon. It is the official remake of John Favreau’s 2014 film of the same name.

This is a marked change in terms of the roles Saif has been playing lately, but it is by no means an uncharted territory. A chef, who is fired from his job as he punched a customer, comes to Kochi to spend time with his son for a few days but as fate would have it, he stays,

Trade analyst Girish Johar had earlier said, “To some extent ‘Judwaa 2’ will remain a competition to ‘Chef’. It has done fantastic business and the mass has really loved the film. But ‘Chef’ as new release has an edge over ‘Judwaa 2’. If Chef’s content is good and people actually like it, then the film may collect as much as Rs 15 crore by the end of the weekend.”

In her review, Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta said, “There are some interesting flavours here, but ‘Chef’ feels derivative, and doesn’t come together as a fully satisfactory dish. And that’s got to do with the uneven, stodgy writing. The smoothness that should have been part of a first-rate spread is evident only in some parts: the others are awkward and stilted and contrived, and that impacts the entire film.”
