Accuses govt. of suppressing number of dengue deaths

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Thursday said the alleged irregularities in the tender process for buying walkie-talkie for the police department had thoroughly exposed the department in Tamil Nadu.

Talking to reporters at his Kolathur constituency, he said while such corrupt practices were common in local administration, national highways and public works departments, the irregularities in police department were very unfortunate.

“It shows the level the police department that is responsible for maintaining law and order has stooped to,” he said.

Mr. Stalin said newspapers had already reported on the irregularities and the Home Secretary was said to have written a letter to DGP seeking an explanation. “But the DGP himself is arraigned in (alleged) the gutkha scandal. But he has been given an extension in service,” he said.

Mr. Stalin also accused the State Health Secretary of suppressing details about those who were affected by dengue fever in the State. “The Health Secretary has said only 26 people have died of dengue. But the State is witnessing death of 10 persons per day and there is evidence to prove 400 people have died (due to dengue). The government is suppressing the truth,” he alleged.

Asked whether he would press the new Governor to hold the Assembly session, he said he had already made the demand immediately after the name of the Governor was announced. “I hope he will not behave like his predecessor. We believe he would have studied the political situation of the State. We had approached the court since we had no faith in the former Governor. We strongly believe we will get a good judgment,” he said.
