The BSE has sought clarification from Tata Consultancy Services in the case of its name appearing in a security blog that claimed a registry data breach has affected several parties.

Moneycontrol had reported the said breach on Tuesday.

The response has been sought from India's largest IT services company TCS in regard to an article on Businesstoday.in on October 05, 2017 titled "Massive data breach hits 6,000 Indian organisations including govt offices, banks: Quick Heal," TCS said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The Unique Identification Authority of India, which was also said to have been impacted in the data breach on the Internet registry Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRNN), had denied any security breach on Wednesday.

The National Internet Exchange of India, the government arm that looks after IRINN, had also clarified that the said attack was not serious and no major harm had been caused.

It is important to understand that the data that was allegedly accessed by the dealer on the DarkNet was not necessarily user data or customer data, but some of it could possibly have been used to shut down a service.

For example, if the dealer or hacker managed to access sensitive login information for an internal company database, they may have been able to ensure that the website or device becomes inaccessible to people.

Among the other entities said to have been impacted were the Bombay Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of India, Wipro, Indian Space Research Organisation, Mastercard/Visa, Spectranet, Hathway, IDBI Bank and EY.
