Warning against taking a hasty decision to privatise the Railways, Communist Party of India leader D. Raja wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday that one of India’s oldest institutions needs “change” and not “termination”.

Mr. Raja said the Railways should not end up being only a “commercial enterprise”. “Though it might be a very sensitive issue with you, the negative impact of demonetisation would surely alert you that hasty decisions will have untold consequences and such issues should be dealt with great gravity,” he said in his letter.

“The present Railway Minister Shri [Piyush] Goyal might be endowed with many virtues. But his recent statement about privatisation has caused worry and dread,” Mr. Raja wrote in his letter.
