Mumbai: A 17-year-old boy was attacked by his neighbour with acid because he mistook him as a petrol thief. The boy was quickly rushed to the nearby hospital. He suffered some serious injuries and because of the injuries he was forced to miss his exams.
According to a report in Mid-Day, the victim has been identified as Rahul Ravindra Bavaskar, resident of Ranale Talao. He is a Std XI student of a college based in Virar. Police sources have also told Mid-Day that the victim was not keen on attending a garba event with his friends.
Since, Rahul did not want to attend the garba event he was hiding from his friends in the opposite lane since it was dark there. However, someone from the adjacent building mistook him for a petrol thief and flung and acid at him.
At first, the boy thought it was water, but later realised it was acid after he started getting burning sensation. Rahul has suffered burns on his back, neck, face and hands. The hospital discharged him on October 2.
Speaking to Mid-Day, an officer from Virar police station said, “We have been receiving several complaints about petrol being stolen from bikes and cars. Rahul was attacked by someone who thought he was a petrol thief.”
Yunus Sheikh, senior inspector, said to Mid-Day, “We have registered a case against the accused under section 326(a) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of IPC. Though he has been identified, he is still on the run. Further investigation into the matter is on.”
