Conclave today on media and social responsibility

CHENNAI: A bevy of veterans of Indian journalism will discuss how society, politics and media influence one another during a conclave on ‘Media and Social Responsibility’ organised by DG Vaishnav College that starts on Friday.
Senior professionals, including Shekhar Gupta, founder, The Print; GS Vasu, Editor, The New Indian Express; N Ravi of The Hindu; and Prem Panicker, founder-editor, peepli.org will take part in the event.
Manoj Kumar Sonthalia, Chairman, The New Indian Express, and S Gurumurthy, Editor, Thuglaq, will also speak at the event.
The two major themes are how politics and media influence each other and how society and media impact each other. The sessions would elaborate on how media acts as an opinion-maker in political discourse and also how debates such as triple talaq in the media sparked a new judicial dialogue. A panel discussion by four field experts will focus on various violations by the media like paid news. Following are the speakers at various sessions:
Politics and Media: Professor Biswajit Das, Director of Centre for Culture, Media and Governance, Jamia Milia Islamia; Kannamma Raman, political scientist, retired professor of University of Mumbai; and Shabbir Ahmed, Deputy News Editor, Times Now, Chennai.
Indian Media and Society: Retired prof Padmaja Shaw, Osmania University; Vibodh Parthasarathi, Centre for Culture, Media and Governance, Jamia Milia Islamia; Tirupur Krishnan, Editor, Amudhasurabhi; and Sisir Basu, Banaras Hindu University.
Panel Discussion on violation by media: Prem Panicker; Gnani Sankaran, writer; Prafulla Ketkar, Editor, Organiser; R Mohan, Madras Union of Journalists.
