Bhayander-based builder had filed FIR alleging extortion

Mumbai: The Thane Police Crime Branch has named fugitive underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees as wanted accused in the case registered on Tuesday against their brother Iqbal.

The FIR registered by the Thane Police Anti-Extortion Cell is the third FIR against Mr. Kaskar for allegedly extorting a Bhayander-based real estate developer of ₹3 crore. Mr. Kaskar allegedly intervened in a deal that the developer was negotiating with a local resident for a 38-acre plot in Gorai.

Thane Police officers said Dawood and Anees were named as accused after investigations revealed their involvement in the offence. They said while Mr. Kaskar used Dawood's name to intimidate the developer, Anees allegedly spoke to the victim over phone on one occasion.

Deal worth ₹35 crore

Police sources said the complainant had finalised the deal worth ₹35 crore, and had paid ₹2 crore. The remainder was to be paid in instalments after the property had been registered in his name. However, two years later, the owner failed to show interest in registering the property in the victim’s name, and began demanding exorbitant amounts of money, and the matter landed in court.

The FIR claims that at a meeting between the developer and the owner in the latter's office, the victim was allegedly made to speak to Mr. Kaskar over phone. “My brothers Dawood and Anees have taken this property. Forget about it now and come and meet me later,” Mr. Kaskar allegedly told the complainant.

Police said another meeting was held at Anees's office in Dongri, where Mr. Kaskar was present. The same evening, the developer began getting threat calls. A Crime Branch officer said, “In 2016, the developer received a call from Anees, who identified himself and told him to let go of the land. Anees said the ₹2 crore paid to the plot owner had been delivered to him, and demanded a ₹1 crore. He allegedly threatened to kill the developer if he did not comply.”

DCP (Crime Branch) Abhishek Trimukhe, said apart from Dawood and Anees, a middleman and two developers were also booked for their involvement in the extortion racket.
