NEW DELHI: Sharad Purnima is a time to seek blessings from Moon. It is also believed that the moon showers nectar through its rays and moonlight holds curative powers. It marks the end of monsoon season and beginning of winters. According to the lunar calendar it falls on the full moon night of Ashwin month.
People keep 'kheer' pots on terraces to absorb nectar showered by moon. Moon's energy is supposed to be the highest on this night as it comes closest to earth.
It is believed that moon showers 'amrit' on Sharad Purnima. It is said to have healing and health-giving powers. It also indicates end of monsoon and beginning of winter season. Since the full moon is considered to be the most beautiful on this day, all celebrations traditionally take place under moonlight. People visited temples and also took holy bath at Ganga ghats.
According to a myth, on the magnificent night of Sharad Purnima, Lord Krishna invited gopis to play 'Maha Raas' with him. He played his bansuri (flute). When Lord Shiva heard the mesmerizing sound of flute, he thought of being the part of this divine happening. Lord Shiva reached Vrindavan. Shri Krishna recognized him immediately and gave him the name of Gopeshwar which means, the lord of gopis.
