NEW DELHI: In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said the leader of the country should own up to facts instead of repudiating them, and admit to his government's failures.

" Instead of excuses+ and saying pessimists are creating an atmosphere, PM Modi should stand up and say we have not managed to deliver," Rahul said at a public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency of Amethi.

The Congress leader was alluding to PM Modi's remarks denigrating critics for calling out the government on the recent economic slowdown. Dubbing his detractors as "pessimists" for describing the April-June growth of 5.7 per cent as doomsday, the Prime Minister had then attacked the erstwhile UPA regime for its poor track record in this regard.

Rahul, who only a few days ago publicly aired his willingness to be Congress party's candidate for Prime Minister, also had some words of advice for PM Modi.

"PM Modi should say we have one more year, we will deliver now. That is what a true leader would do," he said.

Earlier in the day, the Gandhi scion had taken another dig at the PM+ , and claimed that all mega plans rolled out by the BJP-led NDA government had failed to take off.

"If Modiji cannot handle issues affecting India, he should quit and ask the Congress to take charge. I promise that the Congress party will put everything in place within six months," he said.

Rahul further alleged that the Modi government had completely failed on the jobs front and in dealing with the agrarian crisis.

"There is a real serious problem in India today, that we are unable to provide jobs to our youngsters. China produces 50,000 jobs every single day. India, under Modi's Make In India, Start Up/Stand Up India, produces 450 jobs," the Congress leader claimed.
