The industry buzz suggested that some filmmakers of films that were due to release this Friday were upset as apparently, the Tamil Nadu Producers’ Council did not consult with the filmmakers in question before announcing its decision to hold off new releases protesting against the government’s double taxation.

Dulquer Salmaan’s bilingual film Solo released in Tamil Nadu on Thursday but it will be pulled out of the theaters on Friday in line with Producers’ Council decision. Saying that he was heartbroken by the latest developments, director Bejoy Nambiar hoped that the issues will resolve soon.

“It’s with a broken heart I am saying this. Despite our valiant efforts, we won’t be able to stop #Solo Tamil being pulled out of theaters in TN from the 6th because of the strike. The option we had was to not release domestically and let only the international version play out. This was unacceptable to me & my producing partner,” he said in a statement shared on his Twitter page.

The change in film ticket prices following the implementation of GST reportedly affected the enthusiasm of the moviegoers in Tamil Nadu. The members of the film industry, including theatre owners, multiplex chains and film producers, were not ready to accept the state government’s decision to levy 20 percent and 10 percent local body tax on non-Tamil and Tamil films respectively. It is in addition to the 28 percent GST on cinema tickets.

“Our faith & conviction in our film is immense & I am deeply grateful for everyone who has stuck by us. Let’s just hope & pray the strike gets resolved at the earliest,” Bejoy added.

Solo is an anthology of movies, in which Dulquer plays four different roles. The film revolves around four elements: earth, wind, fire and water. Neha Sharam, Sruthi Hariharan, Sai Dhansika and Arthi Venkatesh as female leads.

The Tamil-Malayalam is bankrolled by Refex Entertainment along with Get Away Films. It also stars Nasser, Suhasini Maniratnam, Suresh Menon, Sujata Sehgal and Deepti Sati.
