ANANTAPUR : ACB officials on Wednesday raided properties of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) senior assistant Kovuru Venkata Narayana Reddy in the district, unearthing assets worth Rs 50 crore and disproportionate to the known sources of the officer’s income. The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials, who were acting on a complaint, seized property documents of houses, plots and ornaments in Anantapur town, Penukonda and Nadimi Doddi of Narpala mandal. The complainant accused Reddy of being hand in glove with contractors supplying food to the department for disbursal among Anganwadis in the district. Though the quality of milk, eggs and other food supplements supplied were poor, Reddy allegedly sought exorbitant amounts in expenses from the government.

DSP P Jayarama Raju said eight teams conducted simultaneous raids at Reddy’s residence, properties and also the houses of his relatives and friends between 7 am and 5 pm. Officials found documents of eight buildings, more than 10 house sites and agriculture land located in Anantapur, Dharmavaram, Penukonda, Narpala and Damalcheruvu of Pakala mandal in Chittoor district. Around 1 kg of gold ornaments and silver artefacts weighing 1.25 kg were seized from the residences of Reddy and his relatives. `2.32 lakh was also seized.

The 51-year-old, however, claimed to be innocent, asserting he had documentary proof of legitimate ownership of every asset and added that he had debts worth `1.9 crore. After the searches were concluded, the accused official was arrested and produced before an ACB court. Reddy joined government service on March 1, 1985 as an office subordinate in the Women Development and Child Welfare Department. He was later promoted to the post of junior assistant and worked, after which he took on the role of senior assistant ICDS in Kadiri West of the district. Many have complained against him for allegedly demanding bribes for clearing the bills of Anganwadi workers. Allegations of sexual harassment have also been raised against him by a few Anganwadi staffers. Reddy allegedly runs a money lending business,  giving loans for high interest rates to colleagues and officials.
