Google Pixel 2 has set a precedent that there is still time for innovation in smartphones and AI is the future.
Google Pixel 2 has just launched, and clearly, the company thinks dual camera setup is useless when you can achieve better results with a single camera. Pixel 2 has been launched by Google at a time when most mid-budget to premium smartphones have taken to the dual camera technology. Still, it packs a 12.2 MP rear camera. One would wonder, why would a tech giant like Google avoid the latest technology. The answer lies in AI technology. While we can gauge the success of the Google Pixel 2 camera when it rolls out across the world, a recent report suggests that its single-lens camera is better than the dual setup in Apple iPhone 8 Plus as well as Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
A popular camera testing firm DxOMark recently termed the Apple iPhone 8 Plus camera as “the best smartphone camera we’ve ever tested”. After this, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 was quick to reach the same spot and tie with the iPhone. However, after Google Pixel 2’s launch, it is clear that the smartphone has beaten the previous two and that too by a significant margin. While iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8 scored 94 in the list, Pixel 2 was able to manage a whopping 98. The 4 point lead suggests that Google is confident enough to retreat from the dual camera trend despite being one of the foremost companies when it comes to cutting-edge innovation.

The camera in Google Pixel 2 is able to take pictures in the popular ‘portrait mode’, a feature which makes the dual cameras so famous. But Google is able to do the same using its software. The camera basically identifies the face when you click a picture and understands what needs to be in focus. The Pixel 2 mobile has a ‘dual pixel’ feature, which is used to take two low exposure shots, which the camera combines to make a depth map. This makes it easy for the phone to create a depth of field, and you get DSLR like images.

The DxOMark report says that the Google Pixel 2 smartphone camera is very fast and that too with a very accurate focus. It has a good video performance and screen reproduction. However, these are just aggregate scores and all these smartphones are pretty close to each other. So, after a while what matters is the look and feel of the image, as numbers just portray a part of the big picture. However, one thing is clear, that Google has set a precedent that there is still time for innovation in smartphones and AI is the future.
