Indore: DAVV students to get bicycle free for six months

Indore: Executive Council of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya on Wednesday approved the university’s ambitious proposal of launching bicycle facility on UTD campus with a condition that the bicycle will be provided to students and teachers to roam on the premises for fee of cost only for the first six months.

“In order to encourage students and staff for using non-motorised vehicles and thus reduce carbon footprints on the educational premises, the university had placed a Bicycle Share Programme before the executive council for UTD campus. The EC liked the proposal and gave its nod,” said vice chancellor Dr Narendra Dhakad.

He said that an agency has been identified for providing bicycle on rent to the students and staffers of the university to move inside UTD campus. “For first six months, bicycles will be provided for fee to the students. After six months, the company will give bikes on rent on a very nominal price,” he added.


The university has decided to promote cycling as a safe and healthy alternative means of transportation for UTD campus. The DAVV’s plan is to set up four stations on UTD campus from where students and employees can take bicycles on rent and peddle it to classes or around the campus. The agency officials have offered to provide geared cycles, which are quiet popular among youths. “if bicycle programme turned out to be a success, the university will ban entry of motorised vehicles into campus. Only bicycles will be allowed to move inside the campus,” Dhakad said.

University  automation  project approved

The EC council also approved a proposal for automating works of the university. The university stated that soon tenders will be invited from companies for the university “paper-less”. Computer Centre incharge Niranjan Shrivastava gave presentation of automation project before the EC members. He informed the EC members that the proposal for making university completely automated in phase-wise manner. He stated initially, the results processing work will be automated. Later, examination system and addition process will also be computerised. In next two to three years, the entire university will computerised, he added. As per a rough estimate, the project would cost around Rs 6 crore. Shrivastava stated that at present the university pays Rs 180 per student to MPOnline for a limited online services. “Once DAVV’s own automation project is launched, per student cost for entire services will be about Rs 250,” he added.

Self-financing employees to get first installment of arrear

The EC directed the university administration to give arrears to self-financing employees in instalments and that the first instalment should be given ahead of Diwali. The move came after self-financing employees staged a protest alleging that the DAVV was misleading them on arrears issue. They alleged that the university’s advocate opposed giving arrears to them in High Court which is hearing a petition in the matter. The employees stated that the university had promised to withdraw the petition but to no avail so far. The EC directed the university to withdraw the petition at the earliest and intimate process. The employees demanded for arrear amount in toto. But the VC stated that the government’s rules are against this. He stated that the employees will get their arrears in three to four instalments.

Students raise  contaminated  water issue

Students of School of Education led by NSUI activists met EC members and informed that they do not get potable water at their department. They presented before them a bottle filled with contaminated water claiming that the same type of water is being provided to them for drinking. When the VC called up head of the department, she offered to resign saying that all her complaints regarding contaminated water fell on deaf ears. The VC denied accepting her resignation and assured students of installing a water purifier at their department at the earliest.
