US citizen sent to judicial custody in extradition case

A US citizen, wanted in Indonesia for causing death of a person due to medical negligence last year, has been sent to judicial custody by a after his arrest following a Red Corner Notice.

Randall John Cafferty was arrested from Airport on September 29 following the Red Corner Notice.


He will have to face extradition proceedings in the special here which is waiting for a formal extradition request to be forwarded by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Duty Magistrate Sumeet Anand sent the to jail after the MEA submitted that Indonesia has sent a request for his provisional arrest as he was wanted for facing trial there.

Advocate N K Matta, appearing for the MEA, told the that the formal request for extradition of the 56-year-old Cafferty was awaited and was likely soon.

The judge directed jail authorities to produce him before Special Extradition of in tomorrow.

The judge also took the passport of the accused into its custody and directed the staff to "ensure that under no circumstances the passport is mutilated".

Cafferty was accused of committing various offences in Indonesia, including practising as a health worker without having appropriate licence and causing medical negligence which resulted in the death of the patient.

Indian and Indonesia have an Extradition Treaty in place since 2011.
