Indore: Risky triple-riding goes scot free under no-helmet veil

Indore: While traffic police of ‘Smart City’ boast of launching numerous campaigns and taking regular actions against violators to ensure safer roads, all of their claims fall flat with the data showing their efforts are only limited to drive against no-helmet driving with other serious violations going scot-free. The above claim is evident in the records, which say number of people fined by the traffic department for triple-riding on two-wheelers is almost negligible as compared to the challans issued to violators for not wearing helmet while riding.

According to data, in last eight months the city traffic police could detect only 1,283 cases of triple-riding and fined the violators, while the number of such cases would go double the figure on a single day. Now, one is left to wonder how two-wheelers carrying three people or at times even four could evade the police eye despite it being not at all a rare sight on city roads. Such reluctance of the department to check these kinds of life-threatening violations, which apart from the riders also endanger the lives of other fellow commuters, speak volumes about their seriousness on road safety in the city.

An irked resident of Bakhtawar Ram Nagar, Prince Gupta said “Police should act against those carrying more than two persons on a two-wheeler on the basis of camera footages of RLVD system installed at every square of the city. However, police are least bothered to take action against the triple-riders and fine only cases of no-helmet riding and jumping red lights through e-challans.”

Similarly, Vijay Modi of Vandana Nagar too complained that in absence of fear of police action a large number of youths carry triple on their bikes risking others’ lives, and on the other hand police remain busy in collecting fines from the no-helmet riders. “I have seen many accidents due to those riding-triple on a vehicle and putting others life in risk,” he said. Another unhappy commuter Amrita Sharma, a resident of Bijli Nagar, said “Traffic police should leave their affection of fining the riders not wearing helmet and act against other violators including those over speeding and doing triple-riding.”

What they say

Police hardly care to punish those risking lives of others by doing triple-riding, as they have their main focus only on riders with no-helmets. The funny thing about triple-riding is that bikers leave a pillion rider just few metres before the check post to avoid detection and mount him back again just after crossing the post

I have never seen the police conducting drive against those triple-riding. Police never catch violators and keep blind faith on check points where bikers leave one of their co-riders to fool them

Police is busy in getting revenue through no tolerance on riders without helmet but they never tried to make the city no-tolerance for triple-riding

Police should take stern action against those doing triple-riding as the practice put life of others in risk let alone the bikers
