Agitators block NH-353 by placing the body of Jadumani Bag on road | Express
NUAPADA:Dejected over crop loss, a farmer of Nuapada district has allegedly committed suicide in Nuapada district. The deceased is Jadumani Bag (30) of Lakra village under Boden block. He had consumed pesticide on Monday night and succumbed at a private hospital in Khariar on Tuesday. This is the first reported farmer suicide over crop loss in the kharif season.
The BJP and the Congressmen blocked NH-353 connecting Gopalpur with Raipur by placing the body on the road for three hours in protest against the suicide. The party workers demanded adequate ex gratia for the kin of the deceased. The impasse was resolved after Additional Tehsildar of Boden, Sadashiv Nayak, assured to pay `10,000 from Red Cross, `2,000 under Harishchandra Yojana and facilitate a house for Jadumani’s wife, Dulamani, under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana.
According to reports, Jadumani had inherited 2.25 acres of land from his father and sowed paddy over it in the kharif season. Dulamani informed that her husband had taken a hand loan of `30,000 for cultivation and was worried over crop loss. He had planted the crops before shifting to Mumbai two months back to work as a labourer. He returned on October 1 with a hope that delayed rain would have saved his crop.
When he returned, Jadumani found out that the crops had dried up and would not even yield a kg of paddy. On Monday afternoon, he left for his farm land where he consumed pesticide. Family members found him swooning and rushed him to a private hospital at Khariar, where he died on Tuesday morning.
As the news spread, the BJP, lead by its farmer leader Sanjay Tiwari and Congress, under the leadership of farmer leader Kamal Charan Tandi, blocked NH holding back the body demanding `10 lakh compensation to the family besides, inclusion of Dulamani’s name in all government welfare schemes.
Nuapada Sub-Collector Sarat Srichandan said a joint verification would be carried out by the revenue and police officials. Necessary steps would be taken after they submit their report.
