Lack of awareness among the people of Majri block of Chandigarh, which sees illegal mining in its neighbourhood areas, has led to complaints-logging online portal going unused, reports Indian Express

The portal PB Grams was created to register complaints against the illegal mining activities in the villages of the Majri district. In stark contrast, landlines haven't stopped ringing with people calling in with grievances about the illegal mining. Additional Deputy Commissioner(ADC) Charandev Singh Mann who is in charge of handling nefarious mining activities said that there is an overflow of complaints in the district administration telephone numbers, reports Indian Express.

The online portal, which served the purpose of directly addressing the complaint without mining officials leaking information to the illegal miners, proved to be of no use. The residents of the Majri Block have said that they are unaware of the presence of such a portal or when it was launched by the district administration.

A resident has also said that the process of filing a complaint also remains unclear and creating a portal without making people aware of it is of no use.

"It is an eyewash, we still lodge the complaints with the local mining officials and we can claim that these officials used to leak out the information to the illegal miners," said Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Khijrabaad village.

After a plethora of complaints regarding illegal mining in the district, the portal was created in September. But the portal is in English and requires one to register the complaints in English with no other alternative languages available, making it difficult for village folks to register complaints there.
