GURUGRAM: Over 7,000 residents of Jacobpura have been forced to live in unhygienic conditions as the area has been flooded with sewage for the past two weeks.
Reportedly, a heavily clogged sewage line in the area overflowed and flooded the area some 15 days ago. In just two days, after the gutter overflowed, the sewage flowed into all the streets, in front of houses, shops and schools.
"For the past two weeks, we have been living with a stench. The condition is so bad that we can't sleep at night. Moreover, the area has become an open breeding ground for mosquitoes. Many children in the area are already suffering from dengue and malaria. Sewage overflow has made the situation worse," said Sadhana Devi, a resident of New Railway Road.
The residents also alleged that overflowing of sewage lines have led to broken roads, which were carpeted just a couple of months ago. 75-year-old Pradeep Kumar, who lives near Jain Mandir, said, "There has been no rain in the past 15 days. However, our entire area is waterlogged. Sewage lines always remain blocked, but this time overflow has made it difficult to live in the area.
"Due to continuous waterlogging, many roads that were repaired in July and August have now got damaged. It is a sheer wastage of public money."
The residents alleged that despite multiple complains to Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), no action has been taken and now they are planning to stage a protest. "As most of the area falls under the jurisdiction of the MCG, we have been running from pillar to post to get the problem resolved. However, no official has taken any step to look into the problem. We now have no option, but to protest if it continues like this," said Ramesh Singla, another resident.
An official of MCG, on the other hand, claimed that action has been taken.
"We are aware of the issue and have already taken the water out from a large part of the area. It might just take a day or two to make the entire area free from the overflow," said the official.
