BENGALURU: A lot has already been said and written about the record rainfall this monsoon season. With it, a number of areas in the city that never saw flooding got submerged leaving its residents clueless on what to do.

Rainwater flood several houses in Koramangala

Take the case of this elderly couple from 15th Main Road, 4th Block in Koramangala whose house got flooded with water three times since the first spell of rains began. Usha Mahadevan, 70 years and her husband who is 77 years have been staying on this street for the past 35 years. “The first flooding took place on August 15 and we were in for a total shock as this had never happened before. I and my husband were in total distress,” she says.

Since August, their house was subsequently flooded in September and each time with more water inside the house. “Our washing machine, cupboards, doors and windows got spoilt as a result of the soiling from dirty water during the first flooding. Repairs cost us around `1 lakh. Now we are not financially very well off. We are not very poor but when such sudden expenses crop up it becomes very difficult,” says Usha.
The couple now make sure all things that may get spoilt due to the water stays away from the floor. “Even our neighbors were in for a surprise when the rains came,” she adds.

While the locality was not that flooded, her street, in particular, bore the brunt of the main floods. One of the reasons she suspects her street has been flooded is due to the BBMP laying a new sewage line on the street in front of her house, a few months back.

“They dug up the road for the work and when they laid the road again. It became more elevated. I went to the BWSSB to complain but they said since the sewage lines were running fine, the flooding was not their concern. They asked me to go to the BBMP since they said the matter was their problem,” Usha adds.
Since the past two months whenever it rains Usha goes to her daughter’s house in HSR Layout. “It’s quite an ordeal. We are old people and such sudden occurrences are really unwanted,” she adds
