She was held hostage by her family

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday said it had rescued a woman who was wrongfully confined by her parents for marrying against their wishes.

“The woman fell in love with a man and told her parents about it. Her parents refused to allow her to marry him. They got infuriated when she informed them of the marriage and forcibly confined her,” the DCW said in a statement.

The panel said her family allegedly beat her husband. She managed to call the DCW somehow and was rescued. The police and the DCW’s mobile helpline team rescued her and took her to a police station.

“The police has assured the couple of their safety. Deepika’s husband has alleged that her family threatened to kill him,” said the DCW.

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said: “The DCW’s 181 helpline remains devoted to the cause of safety and security of women and girls.”
