State-level cricket tournament for blind to be organised

For the first time, Ballari will be hosting a State-level cricket tournament for the blind at VIMS grounds from October 5 to 7.

The tournament is being organised by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled in association with Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Ballari.

As many as 12 teams from across the State, including three from Bengaluru, one each from Bidar, Ballari, Raichur, Tumkuru, Chickballapur, Mysuru and Shivamogga, will participate in the tournament, according to Mahantesh Kivadasannaavar, Founder-Managing Trustee of Smarthanam Trust, and president of the Cricket Association for Blind in India.

He told presspersons that winners would represent the State in the South Zone tournament that will be held later. “The objective of the cricket tournament is to select the best player from the State for the Indian Blind team who will be playing in the World Cup which will be held in Dubai in January 2018,” Mr. Kivadasannaavar said.

Ajmal Shakeeb, secretary, IRCS, appealed to people to come in large numbers to watch the matches and encourage the visually challenged. Pola Radhakrishna and Sadhana Hiremath, both members of IRCS, were present.
