Dubochet, Frank share the joy of Nobel chemistry win

Swiss scientist Jacques Dubochet, who won the Nobel prize for chemistry with two other scientists, told reporters in Lausanne on Wednesday that he 'hates personal competition' and prefers collaboration, while in New York, Columbia University biochemistry professor Joachim Frank said he hoped the prize would shine a light on the science. ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Swiss scientist Jacques Dubochet, who won the Nobel prize for chemistry with two other scientists, said he 'hates personal competition' and prefers collaboration, and over in New York, Columbia University biochemistry professor Joachim Frank said he gave an unsophisticated response when he received the call that he won. Dubochet shared the 9 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize with Frank and Richard Henderson. Their work makes it possible to image proteins and other molecules after freezing them rapidly to preserve their shape, providing a powerful new tool for medical research. The new approach fills a previously blank space by generating images of everything from proteins that cause antibiotic resistance to the surface of the Zika virus. Chemistry is the third of this year's Nobel Prizes after the winners of the medicine and physics prizes were announced earlier this week. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awarded the 9 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize, said the technology had moved biochemistry into a new era.
