Govt considering prepaid power meters for tenants

Will help those in rented accommodations avail power subsidy

The Delhi government is considering the option of installing pre-paid electricity meters for those living in rented accommodations so that they are able to avail the power subsidy, which currently goes to landlords.

On Tuesday, Power Minister Satyendar Jain held a meeting with Power Department officials as well as representatives of the discoms in order to come up with ways to extend the benefits of the subsidy to tenants.

The move comes a week after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal directed Mr. Jain to make sure that tenants also benefit from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s subsidy, which is supposed to apply to all domestic consumers who use up to 400 units a month.

Simplifying the process

As per a government statement, Mr. Jain asked the officials to look at the option of pre-paid meters as well as simplifying the process for tenants to avail the subsidy.

He asked the officials to come up with a roadmap for implementing these measures. The option of pre-paid meters already exists, but now the government will look at promoting the option for tenants.
