Police round up CITU activists and whisk them away

Mild tension prevailed in Kothagudem on Tuesday when a group of activists owing allegiance to the CITU attempted to stage a demonstration in front of the head office of the SCCL to protest against a gate meeting allegedly conducted by the TBGKS on the office premises as part of the campaign for the October 5 election. The incident occurred on the concluding day of the campaign in the coal town.

Nizamabad MP and the TBGKS honorary president K Kavitha, Khammam MP P Srinivas Reddy, Kothagudem MLA J Venkat Rao and others addressed the gate meeting.

Commotion prevailed in front of the SCCL head office as a group of CITU activists tried to stage a protest against “allowing” the ruling TRS-backed TBGKS meeting in the precincts of the office complex.

The police personnel deployed at the entrance of the head office foiled their attempt.

The agitated activists shouted slogans denouncing the alleged permission given to the ruling party affiliated TBGKS to hold a meeting on the premises of the head office terming it as a “violation of moral code of conduct.”

The police rounded up the CITU activists and whisked them away from the spot. However, the SCCL sources said the trade unions were permitted to hold gate meetings during the election campaign subject to the stipulation that they should not disrupt the functioning of the coal mines, various departments and offices of the company.
