Ujjain: The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at Vikram University with a discourse on his principles by former head of department, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Prof Suryaprakash Vyas here on Monday. Earlier guests and hosts paid their respects to Gandhi by offering a garland at his statue at the University’s Jiwajirao library, in morning.
Prof Vyas in his address threw light on the various aspects of Gandhi’s personality. He mentioned his legacy of non-violence and ‘satyagrah’ or ‘insistence of truth’ using peaceful demonstration. He further added that “a university is the best place for instilling these great values in a person’s life”. In his presidential speech, vice-chancellor in-charge, Prof HP Singh said Gandhi was a great thinker and his principles are widely followed throughout the world. Gandhi and Shastri both shaped the future of India with their great values, added Singh.
In the beginning of the event, proctor Prof Shailendra Kumar Sharma presented a preface of the discourse and said non-violence, truth and virtue are the three pillars of humanity. Dr SK Mishra conducted the event and Dr Rakesh Dhand proposed a vote of thanks.
500 students take part in flash mob
Over 500 students participated in first flash mob of the city and displayed colours of patriotism on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Tower Chowk. They formed a tricolour and an outline of Gandhi dancing to the tunes of patriotic songs. The event concluded with a recital of the national anthem. Organiser Sadhika Shukla, Urvashi Jaiswal, Avinash Surana and Avdhesh Singh Bais informed that the purpose of the flash mob was to display harmony and unity of our diverse society. Under the ‘Youth Society for Social Harmony’, many school and college students vowed to follow the footsteps of Gandhi and take part in country’s development.
