ESI Hospital should strengthen and upgrade its Departments of Obstetrics & Pediatrics to such a level that it should handle 20 deliveries every day from next month”, said District In-Charge & Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil.

He was speaking after inspecting the facilities at the hospital during his visit on Tuesday. “Everyday, 30 deliveries are reported from District Hospital. As a result, the wards in the hospital are crowded. If deliveries are increased in ESI hospital, it will be beneficial to patients as well as to the District Hospital.”

Dr Patil said, ESI hospital has been opened to provide quality treatment to the poor in the region. Facilities like Pediatrics ICU, Medicine ICU and blood bank should be established on priority basis. Six beds of medicine ICU has all the necessary facilities and patients in need of the facility should be admitted to the ICU.

The minister said, the MCA and ESI guidelines don’t make way for the purchase of certain machines and equipment. He asked the dean of the hospital to make a list of such machines and equipment and to hand it over to him.

ESI Hospital In-charge Dean Nagaraj M said, the hospital received 800 out-patients every day. Around 120 patients are admitted everyday. Of them, 30 to 40 are admitted to medicine ward every month while around 20 are admitted for surgery. The hospital receives around 100 patients everyday in obstetrics department. He said, no critical operation is being performed in the hospital in the absence of blood bank.

He said, there are ten operation theaters (OT) in the hospital of these, eight are functioning. Every month, 186 major and 600 minor surgeries are performed in the hospital. Dr Nagaraj said, of late, the hospital is facing water shortage and garbage disposal problem.
