SRINAGAR: Suspected militants attacked a Border Security Force camp near Sheikh ul Alam International Airport and Air Force station in Humhama area on the outskirts of Srinagar early Tuesday morning.
A group of suspected Fidayeen attackers stormed 182 battalion camp of BSF in Humhama at around 3:45am, and the first round of firing continued till one hour without break.
The officials suspect that three to four attackers have barged inside the camp and one of the militants may have been already killed, as one body was lying in the compound. Three BSF personnel have been reported injured till now.
All morning flights from Srinagar airport have been cancelled and the operations may resume later in the day. The officials and staff of the airport is also not allowed to move towards the airport as the main road has been sealed.
The residents of Humhama, Gogo and Peerbagh, near the airport woke up to heavy artillery fire and panic gripped the whole area as many defined the firing as ‘warlike.’
“There was continuous firing going on for at least 55 minutes. And all of us squeezed in one room for safety. Then the sirens blared out making the situation tenser,” said a resident of Friends Colony located outside the Airport. The residents living around the attack site may not be able to move out of their homes, till the operation is over.
In January 2001, Lashkar-e-Toiba militants had attempted to storm the airport, during which 11 people including six militants and three paramilitary forces were killed and eight government forces were injured.
