JAMMU: An Army jawan was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu's Poonch district on Tuesday.
"Pakistani army around 1250hours initiated unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Krishna Ghati sector," said defence spokesman Col NN Joshi, adding that the Indian side retaliated "strongly and effectively."
Col Joshi said the deceased soldier was identified as Naik Mahendra Chemjung, 35, from Nepal's Chilingdin village. He is survived by his wife and a son.
"In the exchange of fire, Naik Mahendra Chemjung was grievously injured. He later succumbed to his injuries," the spokesman added.
According to official sources nearly 200 people from five forward villages have been shifted to the safer locations identified by civil administration.
On Monday, three civilians, including two children, were killed and 12 others injured when Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked heavy firing and shelling on civilian areas along LoC in Poonch. A Border Security Force jawan was also injured after being hit by a sniper along LoC's Rajouri district.
