Boy drowns in water-filled pit in Tirupur

TIRUPUR: An eight-year-old boy drowned in a rain water-filled pit in a stone quarry at Iduvampalayam in Tirupur city on Monday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Lakshmanan, a son of Mahesh and Jayamani of Iduvampalayam in Tirupur. He was a Class IV student in a government school.

Police said after playing with his friends on Monday evening, the boy went to the water-filled pit to wash his face. But he slipped into the water and drowned.

On being alerted police reached the spot. Fire and rescue services personnel were also informed. However, the body could not be retrieved on Monday evening due to poor light. The body was fished out on Tuesday morning.


The boy's relatives alleged that fire and rescue personnel services personnel arrived at the spot very late on Monday. On Tuesday, they staged a road roko protesting against the late arrival of fire and rescue personnel.


Third such incident


With the death of Lakshmanan, Tirupur district has seen three incidences of boys drowning in water-filled pits within a week. Earlier, M Santhosh, 8, of Allalapuram and D Gokula Krishnan, 14, of Boomalur had drowned in different water-filled pits.
