Jeffrey C Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W Young were on Monday awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize for medicine, marking the beginning of this year’s Nobel season. The Nobel Prize was established in 1895 by the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel and since then numerous Indian nationals have been recipients of this prestigious award along with other eminent personalities from around the world.

Here are the educational backgrounds of four Indian Nobel laureates:

1. Kailash Satyarthi

Kailash Satyarthi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 along with Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai for his contributions and efforts in the field of children’s rights in India. Satyarthi was born in Madhya Pradesh and studied Government Boys Higher Secondary School in the Vidasha district. He later studied engineering from at Samrat Ashok Technological Institute and earned a post graduate degree in high-voltage engineering.

2. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is an Indian origin structural biologist who was born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, brought up in the US and became the recipient of the Nobel Prize in 2009 for his contributions in the field of chemistry. He studied at Convent of Jesus and Mary school in Vadodara, Gujarat and later studied pre-science at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He completed his undergraduation through the National Science Talent Scholarship and moved to the US to obtain a PhD in Physics from Ohio University. He even studied graduate biology at University of California, San Diego.

3. Amartya Sen

Amartya Sen was the recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 and the Bharat Ratna in 1999. Sen studied at St Gregory’s School in Dhaka and later at Patha Bhavana, Santiniketan. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics with a minor in mathematics from Presidency College, Kolkata and went to pursue a second BA in pure economics from Trininty College, Cambridge and bagging a PhD there.

4. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman

CV Raman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his research in the field of light scattering. Born in Tamil Nadu, Raman studied at St Aloysius Anglo-Indian High School in Vishakhapatnam, joined the Madras Presidency College and earned a BA and an Master of Sciences from the University of Madras.
