After a month-long search for Gurmeet Ram Rahim's "adopted" daughter, Haryana Police today arrested Honeypreet Insan.
After a month-long search for Gurmeet Ram Rahim's "adopted" daughter Honeypreet Insan, Haryana Police today arrested her. The woman, who is in her mid-30s and is often referred to as "papa's favourite angel" was wanted in rioting cases related to Panchkula violence among others.
Honeypreet will now be produced in court tomorrow, confirms Panchkula Police Commissioner, AS Chawla.
Honeypreet Insan had been on the run for the past 38 days since her self-proclaimed foster father Gurmeet Ram Rahim's conviction in two rape cases on August 25. He is currently serving 20 years in Rohtak jail.
Earlier today, in an exclusive interview with the India Today Group, Honeypreet had hinted at the possibility of her surrender . Following the airing of the interview, the Haryana police formed a new team to arrest her and other top Dera aides.
The development comes after the state police was accused of helping Honeypreet Insan and other Dera aides, who have been on the run for more than a month, even after lookout notices and non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against them by a Panchkula Court.
In the time that she was absconding, she had managed to escape the police drag net six times before finally being caught today morning.
Today morning, Haryana Police had set up barricades across the state to arrest Honeypreet.
MOST WANTED DAUGHTER
Honeypreet Insan was one among 43 most-wanted people who the police was looking for following the rioting in Panchkula on August 25 after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's sentencing.
Honeypreet had disappeared soon after the Dera Sacha Sauda chief was lodged in the Rohtak Jail. For 38 days, she had played hide and seek with the police with reports suggesting that she had fled to Nepal and other reports saying that she had been spotted in Delhi.
'I WAS DEPRESSED'
In the mega exclusive interview with India Today, an inconsolable fugitive Honeypreet Insan while speaking about her ordeal after Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted said that she will soon approach Haryana and Punjab High Court .
When she was asked about why she hadn't gone to the police yet, Honeypreet said, "You have to understand my condition... I was taught to be a patriot. My father (Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh) and I used to make patriotic movies and now I stand accused of treason? I was taught to live and die for my country, my father instilled such loyalty towards my country in me, and now I'm being branded as a traitor."
"I went into depression on learning about such allegations. Everything finished when papa was sent into jail. I was feeling very helpless, did not know where to go. I don't know much about the judicial procedure. I didn't run away. I just needed time to get back to my senses... so much had happened in such less time."
"I've come to fear the media and the media reports after seeing how I have been portrayed. I cannot describe my present mental state."
WHERE WAS HONEYPREET?
Following Ram Rahim's conviction and subsequent chopper ride, on which Honeypreet had accompanied him to the Rohtak jail where he was lodged, Honeypreet had stayed at a guest house in Rohtak on the night of August 25. The next day, August 26, she reached the Dera headquarters in Sirsa where she met chairperson Vipassana Insan. She stayed at the Dera that night and left the premises the next morning without informing anyone.
From August 27 till date, here are all the places which she had gone to before finally being apprehended:
