Measles-rubella vaccine to be administered from today

The volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) units from two schools in the city on Monday organised a public campaign on the measles-rubella vaccination mission that begins on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the State-level programme at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Ernakulam at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Health Minister K.K. Shylaja will preside.

Campaigns

In the run-up to the mission, 30 students each from Sree Narayana Higher Secondary School, Ayyappan Kavu and the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School led by NSS unit heads spoke to people travelling in buses and distributed pamphlets.

Students organised campaigns at Kaloor bus stand and Vyttila Mobility Hub from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The students explained to the public the importance of the vaccine, and how it would provide lifelong immunity against the diseases for children aged between nine months and 15 years.

Fatal disease

While untreated measles could be fatal, rubella creates congenital disabilities in children when women, unprotected against the disease, contract it in the first trimester of pregnancy.
