Police arrested on Tuesday Honeypreet Insan, the adopted daughter of jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, from a highway in Punjab after more than a month in hiding.
Panchkula police commissioner AS Chawla told Hindustan Times that they acted on a tip-off and arrested Honeypreet along with another woman after a short highway chase near the Nabha Sahib gurdwara on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway.
“There was no involvement of the Punjab Police in the arrest. These are all rumours,” he said when asked about the arrest made on the highway in neighbouring Punjab.
Honeypreet, whose real name is Priyanka Taneja, was arrested hours after she appeared on multiple television channels for interviews, where she denied that she was absconding or any sexual relations with her adopted father. She will be produced in a Panchkula court on Wednesday.
“Now that the 36-day search for her has ended, we will look into the lapses. All those who sheltered her during this period will be booked as she was charged with sedition after the violence in Panchkula on August 25,” Chawla said.
Honeypreet is facing charges of sedition and inciting violence last month after the conviction of Singh on charges of rape. At least 35 people died and scores were injured in clashes that singed four states.
