Mumbai: The mother of a 14-year-old girl from Virar, who is missing since Saturday night, has accused her son from a previous marriage of kidnapping the girl.

The girl had spoken to her half-brother hours before she went missing.

According to the police, on Sunday, the 45-year-old woman from Baliwali, Virar, approached the police to complain that her minor daughter had disappeared from the house sometime during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The woman lives with her second husband and daughter.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant said that her son from an earlier marriage had threatened her in the past.

The woman said that on Saturday night, the son had called her mobile phone and spoken to her daughter.

Though she has not mentioned any specific argument having taken place on that particular night, the police are investigating if there’s a connection between the phone call and the minor’s disappearance.

“We are visiting places where we suspect the youth may have taken his half-sister,” sub-inspector S.A. Dwijkar, the investigating officer in the case, said.

According to the police, preliminary investigations have not revealed any motive for the girl’s disappearance.

“We cannot say at this stage that there were any fights that night or that there was any hostility among the family members,” Mr. Dwijkar said. The police have recorded statements of some family members and neighbours.

The accused has been charged with Section 363 (Kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code.
