NEW DELHI: Home-grown automaker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), who has been working on electric vehicles for quite some time and was also in the bidding race for the same, has lost an order from Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) under the administration of Ministry of Power to supply 10,000 electric cars to Tata Motors.

The contract valued at Rs 1,120 crore is said to be the world's largest single electric vehicle procurement.

The carmaker, which already has two electric cars e2o and electric sedan Verito, lost the battle to Tata Motors electric Tigor.

It was a surprise to many industry experts, as the Mahindra cars were already plying on road and have been approved and tested, while the Tata Tigor electric is yet be seen on road.

On this development, Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra & Mahindra, tweeted, "Congratulations @TataMotors! A terrific price. Delighted the revolution in the EV market has begun. With more players, the market will expand.

"Anand Mahindra has always been vocal about the electric vehicle market. He believes "more the merrier", if there are more players in the electric vehicle business, as it will be easy to build synergies in the ecosystem and hence the result will favourable to all.

Earlier, Anand Mahindra took a dig on the entry of Tesla in the Indian car market. In his tweet to Elon Musk, he said, "Time you got out here Elon. You don't want to leave that whole market to Mahindra, do you?? The more the merrier--and greener.\

"Time you got here Elon. You don’t want to leave the whole market to Mahindra do you? The more the merrier," was Anand Mahindra’s light hearted banter.

Tata Motors, which has bagged the order to supply 10,000 electric vehicles, will roll out the vehicles in a phased manner. In the first phase, the carmaker will supply 500 electric cars to EESL in November 2017. While the rest 9,500 EVs will be delivered in the second phase.

Tata Motors electric Tigor was developed at the European Technical Centre with the help of its luxury car brand Jaguar Land Rover.
