ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. European Union Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday (October 3) there was not enough progress in Britain's talks on leaving the European Union for the bloc to launch negotiations on post-Brexit ties with London. His words were echoed by those of the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, who told Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) that "serious divergence" persisted, including on the divorce bill. During the subsequent debate in Strasbourg on the negotiations on Britain's departure, a leading lawmaker in the European Parliament and ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said British Prime Minister Theresa May should sack Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson if she wants progress in the Brexit talks. Manfred Weber, a German who leads the European People's Party, the assembly's centre-right bloc, said that conflicting statements from May's government, including from Johnson, were holding up the process of reaching a deal. Weber's conservative group is the biggest in a legislature that must approve any deal which EU negotiators strike with Britain before March 2019.
