Top five Bollywood box-office openers of 2017
Bollywood box-office saw an interesting mix of films this year. Form Shah Rukh Khan's Raees reigning the theaters in the first quarter to Baahubali whipping up a storm with its stupendous run at the ticketing counters in April. Even Salman Khan's Tubelight and SRK's Jab Hary Met Sejal had impressive openings with collections of more than Rs 15 crore. Here are the top five openers of 2017 till now. While Salman and Shah Rukh stole the show, Akshay Kumar's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Jolly LLB 2 failed to make the list despite having a rocking lifetime collection. Newest entry to the chart is Varun Dhawan's Judwaa 2 which is at Rs 16.10 crore.
Baahubali 2 - Rs 41 crore in India
Standing on top is unsurprisingly SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 with a staggering opening day collection of Rs 41 crore in India. This high-budget film which hit 6500 screens here and created history with its amazing run at the box office. Starring Prabhas, Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubatti in the lead roles, this sequel of the 2015 series is India's highest grossing film till date.Tubelight - Rs 21.15 crore in India
Salman Khan's Tubelight is second on the list making Rs 21.15 crore on the first day itself. This Kabir Khan film might have not received the love of the critics as was expected but it definitely opened to a positive response from fans across North India, owing to the huge fan following of Salman Bhai. The film even crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark in its first week collecting around Rs 106.50 crore.Raees - Rs 20.42 crore in India
Shah Rukh Khan's Raees grabs the third spot opening at Rs 20.42 crore, just a little behind Salman's Tubelight. Helmed by Rahul Dholakia, Raees also starred Mahira Khan and was one such film that even bowled the critics over with its intense plotline and true-to-life characters. Raees also received a lot of critical acclaim for making fans see SRK in a new light as bootlegger Raees Alam.Judwaa 2 - Rs 15.55 crore in India
Smashing new entry to the list is Varun Dhawan's Judwaa 2 which released on September 29. This David Dhawan film is a remake of the 1997 Salman Khan film and also stars Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez. While remakes are not really Bollywood's cup of tea, it looks like Judwaa 2 has struck gold with its perfect candy-floss romance and Varun's double role as Raja and Prem.Jab Harry Met Sejal - Rs 15.25 crore in India
Releasing amid a lot of expectations, this Imtiaz Ali film may have been unsuccessful in charming critics but it definitely didn't fail in luring fans to the theaters, as can be seen in its opening collection of Rs 15.25 crores at the box office. Starring the much-loved couple of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, JHMS marked the first collaboration between Imtiaz and Shah Rukh Khan.
