Acclaimed Scientist and National Academy of Engineering Member Kathy Yelick to Keynote the 2017 Internet2 Technology Exchange Meeting

Yelick will present on the Department of Energy’s emerging “Superfacility” science discovery model

WASHINGTON--()--Internet2 announced today that Professor Kathy Yelick, associate laboratory director for Computing Sciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will give the keynote address at its Technology Exchange 2017 taking place October 15-18 in San Francisco. Yelick will discuss “The Superfacility: A New Supermodel for Seamless Scientific Discovery.”

Yelick's talk will describe the Superfacility model, a new paradigm for scientific research that combines high-performance computing, networking and experimental facilities into a holistic solution. Her keynote will share early success stories from the scientific fields, as well as the current gaps in workflow tools, identity management, algorithms for analysis, security, among others, that need to be addressed to move the Superfacility model to a production and scalable service.

“A scientist, whether on-campus or at a national laboratory or a supercomputer facility, wants to be able to access and analyze trusted scientific resources from their colleagues, regardless of their geographic location. This exchange of big data is a hallmark of scientific research collaboration and requires access to a robust technology infrastructure and advanced research networks,” said Howard Pfeffer, president and CEO of Internet2. “Professor Yelick’s involvement with this revolutionary Superfacility model that is specifically engineered for science is a timely and welcomed perspective for the research and education community and its efforts to solve common technology challenges.”

Yelick oversees the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, and the Computational Research Division, which performs research in applied math and computer science and develops tools and techniques for advancing scientific discovery. Together, they form an ecosystem for science, which laid the groundwork for the Superfacility concept.

The Technology Exchange is Internet2’s annual technical meeting for the research and education community that focuses primarily on implementation challenges, best common practices, and future directions. The local hosts for the event are CENIC, ESnet, and University of California, Berkeley.
