The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on Monday inaugurated 50 more Indira Canteens in the city, 47 short of the promise made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

All India Congress Committee vice president Rahul Gandhi had inaugurated 101 Indira Canteens in the first phase on August 16. The chief minister, in his budget, had announced that low-cost eateries would be set up in all the 198 wards of the city. “It was planned to inaugurate Indira Canteens in 97 wards during the second phase. But, we are unable to do so due to non-availability of sites,” said BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

On Monday, legislator R V Devaraj inaugurated the canteen near KR Market (Dharmarayaswamy ward) while the one in Hosakerehalli ward was inaugurated by the local corporator Rajeshwari Cholaraj. Mayor Sampath Raj launched the facility in C V Raman Nagar. The BBMP is ready with 12 more kitchens in the second phase.
