Stephen King’s IT defeats Tom Cruise’s American Made at the weekend box office

IT is still going strong in the face of stiff competition from Tom Cruise’s American Made.

The film adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel ‘It’ is still pretty smoothly defeating its competitors in both domestic and international markets. Even though many newcomers like Colin Firth and Channing Tatum starrer ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ and Tom Cruise starrer ‘American Made’ have tried to usurp its top spot, but this Andrés Muschietti directorial just does not know how to lose. IT is based on the titular entity, who usually appears in the form of a clown called Pennywise and terrorises and murders children in a fictional Maine town called Derry. Against IT stand a bunch of bullied children who call themselves The Loser’s Club. This is the third weekend out of four in which IT has remained on top position.

It grabbed $17.3 million this weekend domestically. ‘American Made’ was not far behind and accumulated $17.01 million. On the third spot is ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ which earned $17 million. This is basically a war of three giants – Warner Bros’ ‘It’, Universal’s ‘American Made’ and 20th Century Fox’s ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’.

Ever since IT was released, it has been breaking one record after another. At the United States box office, ‘IT’ accumulated a staggering $117.2m on its opening day. ‘IT’ has also received highly positive reviews overall and according to Rotten Tomatoes, a website that gives an aggregate rating, 84 percent of its reviews are positive.

‘IT’ also had the highest opening for a horror film in the history of cinema at a massive $123 million and ‘It’ also has earned more than double the earlier record holder, which was ‘Paranormal Activity 3′. It’ also had the biggest opening ever for a September film belonging to any genre.
