Mumbai: The shameful stealing of victims’ belongings and ornaments was highlighted on Sunday, when the family of Chandan Singh (28) visited Dadar police station to collect his belongings. Mr. Singh died in the stampede on Friday.
“We have got his watch and wallet, but a laptop and some official documents he was carrying are still missing,” his brothers said.
A Badlapur resident Mr. Singh was an accountant at with a firm located on Elphinstone Road. He had alighted from the train at Parel station when it began to rain, and is believed to have taken shelter on the ill-fated foot overbridge.
Besides Mr. Singh, police have begun returning belongings including gold jewellery of other victims. “KEM Hospital doctors have given us the belongings of the deceased, which were removed by the ward boys during post-mortem,” ACP (Dadar Division) Sunil Deshmukh said. Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the stampede.
Police are also investigating theft and molestation cases reported by eyewitnesses and victims’ relatives. “We are closely studying the video recordings,” Mr. Deshmukh said.
Apart from CCTV footage, police are also checking video clips recorded by commuters on mobile phones at the time of the stampede.
