Catalan leader says the region won the right to break away from Spain

Oct 02, 2017, 17:12 IST

Catalonian President Carles Puigdemont said that the region has won the right to be independent from Spain after October 1 referendum. His government claims that 90% of voters backed the decision to break away from Spain in October 1 referendum. However, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that the referendum was banned. He said that vote process will only lead to division among citizens and will push them to confrontation. Unions and Catalan associations called a region-wide strike on October 3.
