THE STATE CID has arrested an ‘expelled’ BJP leader for allegedly spreading enmity through the social media. “A case was registered against Santosh Thakur at Mahestala police station in South 24 Parganas on September 29. He was arrested on October 1 and booked under IPC and the Information Technology Act… He has been spreading enmity through Internet among different religions,” said DIG (CID Operations) Nishat Parvez.

Thakur, who was arrested from Mahestala area, has been remanded to seven days in police custody. While CID officials said Thakur is a member of the BJP, the party claimed that he had been expelled recently over “anti-party activites”.

“He was the convener of the party’s district trade cell, as he is a chartered accountant. On August 9, he was expelled as he indulged in anti-party activities. He was the trade cell convener only for one-and-a-half months,” BJP district president Abhijit Das said.
