Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reached Rajghat to pay floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary. The prime minister, earlier, shared a video on Twitter with audio clippings from his past speeches in which he recalled Gandhi’s legacy. “I bow to beloved Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. His noble ideals motivate millions across the world,” PM Modi tweeted.

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also reached Rajghat to pay their respects to Gandhi. Singh also paid tributes at Lal Bahadur Shastri’s memorial at Vijay Ghat on October 2.

12:40 pm: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti remembered Mahatma Gandhi. In a tweet, he wrote, “Remembering Bapu on his birth anniversary. Let’s pledge to protect and defend the ideas he stood for till our last breath.”

12:18 pm: We are ready to built statues for great personalities, but then no one comes forward for keeping the area clean, PM Modi said.

12:17 pm: PM Modi expresses gratitude to media for their role in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. “Media played a big role in cleanliness drive,” PM Modi said.

12:15 pm: PM Modi asked the nation to think about the condition of mothers who have to wait till the dawn to relieve themselves because of lack of toilets at home.

12:12 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked opposition parties to rise above politics on the issue of Swachh Bharat. “Criticise me on many things. But on Swachh Bharat mission, let’s rise above politics,” PM Modi said.

12:10 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Clean India Mission is about systems and mindset. Speaking at the event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Modi said, “The Swachh Bharat Mission is about both ‘Vyavastha’ (systems) and ‘Vichar’ (thought process and mindset).”

12:05 pm: PM Modi said ‘Swachhagrahis’ will improve the country just like how Satyagrahis brought independence. “It was due to ‘Satyagrahis’ we got ‘Swaraj’ but now ‘Swachhagrahis’ will make the country ‘Shreshtha’,” PM Modi said.

12:02 pm: PM Modi said that a spirit of compeitition has been created due to Swacchh Bharat Mission. “A positive spirit of competition has been created due to Swachh Bharat Mission. We see this in the cleanliness rankings, how organisations are working on cleanliness,” he said.

12:00 pm: Speaking at the event, PM Modi said that Swachh Bharat mission has become an integral parts of the live of people across the country. “India has accepted the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. The movement has become a people’s movement due to the ‘Siddhi’ of Swachhagrahis,” he added.

11:53 am: Prime Minister addressed nation from Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. Addressing the event to mark the 3rd anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission, PM Modi said, “India faces challenges but that does not mean we run away from them. We will face them and work to overcome them.” He added that Swachh Bharat will not come true even if 1000 Mahatma Gandhis, 1 Lakh Modi and all Chief Ministers and governments come together but will be fulfilled only when 125 crore people come together, we can fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s wishes of Swachh Bharat.

10:45 am: BJP President Amit Shah on Monday said that the path laid down by Mahatma Gandhi is more relevant these days than it was in the past. Speaking to reporters in Porbandar, Shah said “The message given by Mahatma Gandhi maybe seems more relevant today than it was in Gandhi-era.”

10:30 am: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state Governor Ram Naik spun charkha at Shri Gandhi Ashram Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan in Lucknow on Gandhi Jayanti.

10:20 am: Social activist Anna Hazare reached Delhi on Monday to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi. Speaking to reporters, Hazare said, “I have just come to pay my respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.”

10:10 am: Vice- President Venkaiah Naidu unveiled Mahatma Gandhi statue in the parking area of Rajghat in New Delhi on Gandhi Jayanti.

10:05 am: Union Minister Ananthkumar celebrated Gandhi Jayanti in Vijaya College in Bengauru. In a tweet, he wrote, “Our focus on #SwachhataHiSeva continues on #GandhiJayanti today in #Bengaluru following @narendramodi ji’s vision of a clean India.” Minister of State Pon Radhakrishnan inaugurated a medical camp at Tirunelveli on October 2. In a tweet, he wrote, “Inaugurated Medical camp , focus on #SwachhataHiSeva #GandhiJayanti at Tirunelveli.”

10:00 am West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to pay her respects to Mahatma Gandhi. In a tweet, she wrote, “Homage to the Father of the Nation on his birth anniversary.” Banerjee also remembered Shastri for his work on farmers’ welfare. “Remembering Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji on his birth anniversary today. Let us never forget the welfare of our farmers.”

9:45 am: Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Dharmendra Pradhan asked nation to pledge to clean India mission on Gandhi Jayanti. Prasad, in a tweet wrote, “My tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on #GandhiJayanti. Our contributions towards #SwachhBharat shall be our real tribute to #Bapu.” Pradhan, in a tweet, wrote: “Let us pledge #SwachhataHiSeva on #GandhiJayanti as a tribute to ‘Father of the Nation’ to fulfill the dream of a #NewIndia by 2022.”

9:20 am: Union Minister Smriti Irani paid her tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. She recalled the ‘father of the nation’ on his birth anniversary for his ideals of “truth, non-violence and peace”.

9:15 am: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath along with state governor Ram Naik paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 in Lucknow.

9:10 am: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu took to Twitter to urge nation to fight against “evils” of the society on Gandhi Jayanti. In a series of tweets, Naidu wrote, “As nation celebrates 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, I call upon every citizen to take a pledge to fight against various evils.” He added: “Fight against poverty, corruption, illiteracy, casteism, communalism, gender discrimination, atrocities against weaker sections.” He further asked the nation to strive towards equality. “Let us all strive to realise the dreams of Gandhiji and usher in ‘Ram Rajya’ where all are equal and there is no discrimination of any kind,” Naidu wrote on Twitter.. “The biggest tribute we can pay to the Father of the Nation is to follow his ideals in letter and spirit,” he added.
