Las Vegas shooting: Things we know so far

A shooter opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest festival, a country music concert, in Las Vegas on Sunday night, killing more than 50 people and injuring at least 200 in what is now the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The gunman is believed to have acted alone, is dead and police had located a woman they were looking for who had been traveling with him.

The gunman has been identified as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada, according to Lombardo and that Paddock acted alone. Police said they found “numerous firearms” in his hotel room and that he died during a standoff with law enforcement on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. So far, there is no information on his motive for the deadly shooting.

Here is what we know about the attack till now:


    1. On its Twitter account Sunday night, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported an active shooter in the vicinity of the Mandalay Bay hotel on the Las Vegas strip.

  1. The shootout occurred towards the end of a country music festival, while singer Jason Aldean was performing on-stage. Festival-goers initially mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks, before fleeing in a panic. Almost 40,000 people are said to be at the concert
  1. Las Vegas police has confirmed that 50 people died in the attack, while more than 200 were injured.
  1. Off-duty police officers who were attending the concert were among the dead. At least two off-duty officers are being treated for injuries.
    1. Las Vegas police’s official Twitter handle confirmed that one shooter was dead after police used a controlled explosion to enter the 32nd floor of the hotel. The shooter has been identified as a local man, but his name has not been revealed yet. The police also confirmed that they do not believe another shooter is at large.

  1. Police have named the gunman as Stephen Paddock.
    1. The police is also on the lookout for Marilou Danley, a Filipino-origin woman, who is said to be the shooter’s companion. Danley has been named as a ‘person of interest’ in the shooting and the police has released a photo of her.

8) All planes flying in or out of the city’s McCarran International airport, which is east of the hotel where the incident took place, were temporarily grounded on Sunday evening, but some flights have now resumed service.

9) The University Medical Center, a hospital near the Mandelay Bay Resort and Hotel, told police not to bring in additional casualties since it was at capacity, reports The New York Times. Other injured were rushed to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.

10) The Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort is on a lockdown and is not letting people into the building. Guests have been told to stay in their rooms, reported the Las Vegas Review Journal. The hotel put out an official statement expressing condolences, but did not give out any further details:
