After Judwaa 2, here’s looking at five other comedy classics from the 90s that could be remade

20 years after the release of the original, David Dhawan recreated his own film Judwaa 2. The nostalgia of 90s runs deep with the audience and the remake of these 5 films from that era would be quite interesting to watch.

Directed by David Dhawan, Judwaa 2 is the remake of the popular 1997 film.

The 90s were a different era for Hindi films. The comedies were light and breezy and the audience happily lapped up whatever made them laugh. It was during those lively 90s that David Dhawan made some great comedies, and Judwaa (1997) was one of them. 20 years later, he recreated his original work with a new cast and released it as Judwaa 2.

The original film is one of Dhawan’s best comedies but the new film is being judged for its dated jokes, offensive dialogues and the way it stereotypes its characters. The film created a lot of positive buzz, especially with the recreation of hit songs like Tan Tana Tan and Oonchi Hai Building but a good remake requires a lot more than that. Nevertheless, the performances of Varun Dhawan and Taapsee Pannu are being applauded in the film but it is highly unlikely that this one will gain the status that was once held by the original film.

Judwaa’s remake makes us wonder about other comedies from the 90s that could be remade and would still be enjoyed by the audience today. Here are 5 films that could be remade and hopefully supersede the original.

1. Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi (1997)

Starring Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla in lead roles, this film was also directed by David Dhawan. The film is still remembered as one of Akshay’s best comic performances and with Kader Khan and Paresh Rawal in the film’s ensemble, it was a laughter riot. If remade in this age, this film would be crackling with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. Looking at their chemistry in TV commercials, it is easy to say that they would fit into this one perfectly.

2. Dulhe Raja (1998)

This Govinda-Raveena Tandon film was a comedy directed by Harmesh Malhotra. With Kader Khan playing a pivotal role, the film is still quite popular. While there could be no replacement for Chi Chi, if the film is remade today it could possibly be remade with Varun Dhawan and Sonakshi Sinha.

3. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

The original film by Rajkumar Santoshi is considered a cult classic. The film wasn’t a box-office success when it released back in the day but has gained massive popularity over the years. The dialogues and characters of the film have become a part of Indian pop culture so in all likelihood, a remake of the original would be a hard one to pull off. But it would be intriguing to watch actors like Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh step into Amar and Prem’s shoes.

4. Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999)

Another one of David Dhawan’s comedy classics, this film had Govinda and Sanjay Dutt put their best foot forward. Satish Kaushik, Aruna Irani, Kader Khan and the rest of the ensemble managed to make this film comically brilliant and this one still hasn’t lost its touch. With Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles, this comedy could be remade for the current generation. It would be refreshing to watch these two actors attempt roles that have gained a cult status.

5. Chachi 420 (1997)

This Kamal Hassan directed film was a remake of the Tamil film Avvai Shanmughi which was inspired by the Robin Williams-starrer Mrs. Doubtfire. Kamal Hassan played the title role in the film. Tabu, Amrish Puri and Om Puri were brilliantly cast in the 1997 film that is still remembered by the audience. Dangal actress Fatima Sana Shaikh made her debut as a child artist with this film.

For this film to be recreated today, the makers would have to be extremely tasteful with dressing up a male actor in drag as it has already been overdone by comedians on television. An actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui would be a perfect fit for this role. From what we have seen in the past, Nawazuddin can completely transform into his charcater and that is quite necessary for a role like this.

The memories of watching the original seldom fade away but the remakes could very well be marketed to the newer audience and who knows, if someone actually manages to pull off an unexpected remake, it would be pretty iconic.
