Penn Terminals loads ship with supplies for Puerto Rico
Jose Martinez is using his work to keep his mind off family and friends back in Puerto Rico. Martinez works at Penn Terminals in Eddystone. He’s been on the mainland since he was 13, and the best he can do right to take his mind off family back in Puerto Rica with whom he’s had no contact since before Hurricane Maria devastated the island was to focus on filling the containers at Penn Terminals with skids of food and water. The materials are destined for the devastated island Sunday.
Local residents still trying desperately to reach relatives in Puerto Rico
Ted Trevarrow doesn’t know when he will see his brother. Trevarrow, of Kennett Township, is now trying to charter a plane from Miami to Vieques, a six-mile long island just to the east of Puerto Rico, which was pummeled by Hurricane Maria. “It’s a survival situation now,” Trevarrow said. “It’s been nine days and the countdown has begun. We have to get help within the next week or so or there will be serious consequences. There are people there who are on dialysis and have not had dialysis for eight days now, babies in incubators and people on life support. They need deliveries of fuel (for the generators).”
Defense: Video of Route 100 race not admissible at triple-fatal 422 crash trial
One of two men awaiting trial for allegedly causing a triple-fatal crash while racing on Route 422 in West Pottsgrove is trying to prevent jurors from ever seeing a cellphone video of an earlier race the pair participated in on Route 100. Evaughn-Sha Antonio Walters, 21, through his lawyer, filed papers in Montgomery County Court seeking to suppress from his upcoming trial a cellphone video prosecutors alleged he created of the Route 100 race that occurred an hour before the fatal Feb. 4, 2017, crash. Defense lawyer Ryan L. Hyde contends the video was obtained by county detectives without the proper consent from Walters.

Hatfield firefighter tax cut approved
A big break for firefighters in Hatfield Township is now on the books, and township officials hope it serves as a sign of their gratitude. “Each of you answers the call, every single day. Whether there’s a fire or not, you train, it’s on your mind, it is something you build your families around, and that is more than just admirable: it’s one of the best ways of serving your community that we can think of,” said Commissioners President Tom Zipfel.

For Eagles, another winless opponent, not another patsy
Another week, another winless challenge for the Eagles. This week the opponent is the 0-3 Los Angeles Chargers, formerly of San Diego but for three years just regular old tenants playing out of the Stub Hub Center in Carson, Calif. It’s the soccer home of the L.A. Galaxy, which had that other superstar named Beckham (4:05 p.m., Channel 29, WIP 94.1-FM).
McCaffery: Change of Phillies’ plans can be traced to vow from the top
More than any game, any at-bat or any pitch, and more than any rookie or veteran or record-setting highlight, it was one under-repeated but wildly important statement that defined the Phillies in 2017. Said on a radio program, then discussed but not obsessed over, it came from John Middleton, the wealthy front man for club ownership. His franchise losing games and fans and status and momentum, Middleton promised to broadcaster Angelo Cataldi that he would return the Phillies to contention … or he would die trying.
