DGSTI Chennai arrests jeweller for Rs 20 crore central excise duty evasion

MUMBAI: The directorate general of goods and services tax intelligence (DGSTI) Chennai has arrested a major jewellery manufacturer based out of that city for evasion of central excise to the tune of Rs 20 crore.
This is the first arrest of any jeweller all over India made by DGSTI.
The MD & CEO was arrested on September 29 and has been remanded to 14 days judicial custody, the DGSTI said in a release .
The government in the Union Budget for 2016 -17 introduced a 1% central excise on jewellery makers.
